OVERVIEW AND CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

The Shape of a Soul is a 9-part progressive jazz-fusion suite mapping the human psychological journey from chaos and isolation to integrated peace, or Eudaimonia.

Grounded in the Becoming vs. Being ontology, it uses precise musical geometry to illustrate Holognosis: a synthesis where the Aristotelian Golden Mean builds the structural integrity necessary to bear the weight of sacrificial love.

The suite is structurally anchored by a three-dimensional coordinate system:

The Horizontal Axis (The Circle of Fifths)

Moving from C → G → D → A → E → B → F# → C# → Ab, each section adds one sharp, building cumulative complexity. This represents the forward-moving architecture of “Becoming”—a soul building virtuous habits over time.

The Vertical Axis (Cycles of Minor Thirds)

When grouped by psychological state (Deficiencies, Excesses, Means), the keys form diminished minor-third cycles. These intervals do not resolve; they drift. This harmonically captures “intraction”: the state of being suspended between poles without arriving at either.

The Depth Axis (Tempo as Physiology)

Rhythm is hardcoded to represent physical states. The Deficiencies drag at 60 BPM, the body’s resting rate at minimum function. The Excesses redline at 152 BPM, a system running beyond its thermal envelope. The Means lock into a resolute 117.5 BPM. This is Anthony’s regulated walking pace, encoding his literal stride into the harmonic structure as the definition of the Mean.

MOVEMENT I: THE ARCHITECTURE OF CHARACTER

A figure standing waist-deep in still black water beneath an eclipsed sun, half its body rendered as clear glass and half as flesh, with a white house-shaped form set into its chest. Engineering dimension lines are drawn across the body as though it were a measured object.

Section 1: The Unformed (Deficiency)

Key: C Major
Tempo: 60.1 BPM
Philosophy: The blank slate. The soul before habituation, unformed and lacking driving vitality.

Integrated Production Notes: Engineered as minimalist math-rock. Pure C Major was enforced with a clinical key-pinning technique to maintain a dry, skeletal environment. Reverb and low-end warmth were intentionally avoided to represent a state lacking vitality.

A violent painted split down the middle of the canvas - on one side snarling wolves in a broken doorway, on the other a running anatomical figure wreathed in flame. Drum kits, cymbals and staves of music fly apart around a cracked white sun above a burning green city.

Section 2: The Impulsive (Excess)

Key: G Major clashing with Db Major Tritone
Tempo: 152.0 BPM

Philosophy: Pure, rash momentum. Unthinking energy that lacks structural control.

Integrated Production Notes: Frantic punk-fusion. The engine initially hallucinated a dark G Minor arrangement, but G Major was re-enforced to capture bright chaos without darkness. A Db Major secondary lead was selected to create a maximal tritone clash, producing unhinged tonal instability and an aggressive lack of dynamic control.

A painted allegory - a figure with anatomical lines walks a stone bridge over a dark whirlpool, carrying an electric guitar by the neck like a plumb line, haloed by a ring of note names. Equations and golden-ratio spirals overlay a landscape of gears and furnaces, with a cross set into the keystone beneath.

Section 3: The Habituated Soul (The Mean)

Key: D Major with C Major accompaniment
Tempo: 117.5 BPM

Philosophy: The active victory of habituated courage, seasoned through enduring previous struggles.

Integrated Production Notes: Resolute progressive rock synthesizing the precision of Section 1 with the vitality of Section 2. An initial remix used an A Major lead, but it sounded too final. It was refined with a C Major secondary lead to provide battle-hardened resilience. A 14x5 snare established a reliable pulse, and high dynamic range allowed the mix to breathe.

MOVEMENT II: THE ORDERED SOUL (INTELLECT)

A pale blue marble hall of columns and open books, brass scales hanging empty and balanced overhead. Behind a pane of glass a haloed figure sits with open hands over a book, its torso patterned like circuitry, two points marked A on a curve running through the floor.

Section 4: The Apathetic Reason (Deficiency)

Key: A Major
Tempo: 60.1 BPM

Philosophy: The intellect without passion. An empty state that understands justice but has no hunger to enact it.

Integrated Production Notes: Sparse, cold jazz fusion in 7/8 time. Pinned in A Major using hollow keyboard drones and high-pitched jingles instead of a driving snare. It was played slowly to simulate musical gears grinding without forward movement.

A spiralling amphitheatre built entirely of sheet music, ledgers and equations, wrapping around a luminous figure at its centre holding calipers and a small flame. Other angular figures draw a rose from a technical diagram, face a mirror, and work among gears and server racks.

Section 5: The Over-Analyzed (Excess)

Key: E Major clashing with E Minor / Phrygian
Tempo: 99.4 BPM

Philosophy: The mind turning on itself. An intellectually arrogant state where over-calculation creates dissonance.

Integrated Production Notes: Suffocating math rock. The initial arrangement possessed an overly bright synth texture. To simulate the intellect suffocating itself, an E Minor guitar was added, creating intense modal friction. Hyper-complex time signatures and reduced dynamic range built an arrogant wall of sound.

A flayed anatomical figure in a translucent white robe stands in a Romanesque stone doorway, gold spheres haloed behind its head, holding a coiled leather strap. Beside it are drafting compasses, brass scales with a lit candle in one pan, a tuning fork and a stack of books labelled Aristotle, Musical Theory and Bible; through the arch lies a green river valley and a distant city, with a circle of key names in the sky.

Section 6: The Mean (Temperance and Righteousness)

Key: B Major with an E Major Lydian lift
Tempo: 83.4 BPM

Philosophy: A soul that has learned to rule itself, balancing intellect and spirit while anchored in discipline.

Integrated Production Notes: Disciplined 7/8 jazz fusion. Anchored in the dense key of B Major (5 sharps). An E Major secondary guitar was woven in to create a bright Lydian lift, capturing a disciplined soul reaching for the next horizon. Sharp snare hits and restored dynamic range ensured a breathable, temperant mix.

MOVEMENT III: THE COMMUNAL LIFE (METAPATHY)

A muscled figure playing an electric guitar, sealed inside a tall glass obelisk on a pale frozen plain under a night sky of stars. Staves of music and drafting marks are ruled across the glass, annotated F# and 80.7, while a bare hand reaches toward the base from outside.

Section 7: The Isolated (Deficiency)

Key: F# Major
Tempo: 80.7 BPM

Philosophy: The ultimate lack of communal connection. A bright but utterly lonely star in an empty sky.

Integrated Production Notes: Cold, dry, and physically quiet. Pinned in F# Major with a solitary guitar melody. Stripped of harmonic accompaniment and low-end bass warmth. Hesitant percussion and a fragile frequency profile simulate absolute isolation.

A crowded symmetrical collage split by a taut horizontal wire, a calm anatomical figure at the centre. Around it, brass bells, loudspeakers, stained glass, waveforms and shouting faces press in from both sides, with banners of half-legible text and the note name C sharp.

Section 8: The Overwhelming (Excess)

Key: C# Major clashing with A Major
Tempo: 152.0 BPM

Philosophy: The chaotic extreme of community, where individual boundaries are crushed by overwhelming external forces.

Integrated Production Notes: A grandiose, over-saturated wall of sound. C# Major was layered with an A Major brass and guitar section, creating a suffocating Chromatic Mediant clash. Excessive reverb, flattened dynamic range, and hyper-active rhythmic fills sounded the trumpet for show rather than purpose.

A translucent figure kneels in prayer on the flagstones outside a Gothic church at dusk, surrounded by brass instruments laid down on the ground - tuba, saxophone, trumpet, trombone. Equations and construction lines are drawn over the stonework, and robed figures stand in the lit archway behind.

Section 9: Eudaimonia (Humble Triumph)

Key: Ab Major with Db Major brass
Tempo: 117.5 BPM

Philosophy: The transition from Becoming into Being. The integrated soul carries its past struggles into a grounded triumph of love and order.

Integrated Production Notes: An epic jazz fusion finale. Key pinning forced Ab Major to avoid minor-key hallucinations. The arrangement opens with a flashback weaving the lonely F# Major (Section 8) and the crushing C# Major (Section into the final resolution. Tonal weight is anchored by heavy tuba and baritone sax rather than bright trumpets, providing a grounded, architectural finish.

INSIDER NOTES: THE ARCHITECTURE OF SURVIVAL

The Mythological Blueprint

Decades before the suite was composed, its blueprint was drafted in the high school Eclipse Saga poems. The concepts of crossing a bridge of morality and transitioning from the active struggle of Becoming into the static peace of Being (The Library-State) are the mathematical realizations of this 30-year-old mythology.

The Crucible of Lived Experience

The musical extremes map directly to survival. The hollow, half-time tracks represent solipsistic void and isolation. The frantic 152 BPM tracks represent surviving intense trauma, addiction, and psychosis. The Golden Mean was not merely intellectualized; it was structurally rebuilt from absolute destructive extremes.

The Theological Synthesis

The progression through Character, Intellect, and Community maps directly to Nicomachean Ethics. This suite represents Holognosis: recognizing that structural integrity is necessary but not sufficient. A perfect soul is not built to hoard power, but to bear the weight of sacrificial love (Agape), as modeled by Jesus Christ. The final heavy brass is the sound of a soul that has achieved order, picked up its cross, and transitioned beautifully into a state of Being.
