Before you can think, you have to stop reacting.**

That sounds obvious. It isn’t. Social media and the general information environment most of us live in has been engineered to make reaction faster than thought. The posts that travel furthest are not the most accurate or the most useful, but ones that catch an emotion before the mind can examine it.

It has reached a scale and a sophistication that older civic tools were not built to handle. Structural Civics exists, in part, to build new ones.

The tool introduced here is called the SHIT Check. The name is intentional. It is meant to produce a small involuntary reaction — mild amusement, mild discomfort, recognition — which is itself a demonstration of the problem it addresses. You just felt something before you decided to. That’s the mechanism. Now you can look at it.

The SHIT Check is a two-stage protocol. The first stage identifies the post as a manipulation instrument. The second stage tells you what to do instead of reacting. It was designed to be memorable under conditions of emotional activation, which is precisely when most analytical tools fail — because they require a calm mind that the post was specifically designed to prevent.

First, what’s a SHIT post?

  • S (Spectacle) “What am I being shown?”
  • H (Hook) “What emotion is this trying to catch?”
  • I (Identity) “What side am I being pressured to defend or attack?”
  • T (Trigger) “What reaction is it trying to produce before I think?”

A SHIT post says: “React first. Think later.” The SHIT Check says: “No. I’m going to look at the machinery.”

When you’ve identified a SHIT post you SHIT on it.

  • S (Stop) Don’t immediately reply, share, dunk, defend, eat
  • H (Hold) Hold your emotional reaction without obeying it.
  • I (Inspect) Inspect the claim. What is being claimed? What is proven? What is missing? What is assumed? Who benefits if I react without checking?
  • T (Translate) Translate the spectacle into structure. What is the actual mechanism underneath this?

When you spot a SHIT post, explain the machinery or ignore it — but if you’re explaining to score points, you’re just playing in SHIT yourself.

This is Project Antioxidant in its most portable form: a tool small enough to carry into any conversation, sharp enough to cut through the spectacle, and honest enough to warn you that the tool itself can be misused.

Use it to see the machinery. Not to score points. If you’re using it to score points, you’re playing in SHIT yourself.
