84 individual works published on this site were composed between 1990 and 2015 — before any usable large language model existed. Nothing below could have been machine-written, whatever it sounds like.

This page is regenerated on every deploy, and its claims are checked each time it is built. The counts are derived, not remembered.

The criterion

The dates come from the archive’s own filing — content dates carried in filenames and era divisions on the collection pages — not from anyone’s judgement of the prose. The earliest usable LLMs appear around 2020, and ordinary writing use begins in late 2022. Every work below predates both by years, most by decades.

The verification

Dates establish when something was written. A second check establishes that the words published here are the words from the period: each work’s archived source text is compared word-for-word against what this site publishes, on every build.

82 of 84 works match verbatim. The 2 exceptions are deliberate: The Spaghetti Works Story and Happy New Year 2002 carry name changes made at publication to protect third parties — the text is otherwise untouched, and the divergence is disclosed here rather than smoothed over.

The archive also holds later commentary on this work, some of it written with AI assistance and marked as such. None of it is published on these pages; that is checked too.

What this page does not claim

Work dated 2026 — the Sentinel Briefs, the Psalms of the Way, the recipes, and the recent essays — is deliberately absent. The archive carries no authorship record for it either way, and absence of a marker proves nothing in either direction. Some of it is collaborative by design and says so on its face; the Sentinel Briefs grade their own claims precisely because provenance is a property worth stating rather than implying. This page lists only what can be established, and stops there.
